THE MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT 9:18 a.m. by Mark Backes, who welcomed and thanked everyone for attending.
MINUTES of the February 3, 2007 meetings were distributed and approved.
TREASURER’S REPORT - John Stignani submitted a financial report that indicated our current reconciled balance is $8076.1125. This report was approved as submitted.
Discussion was made by club members regarding the bank balance being higher this year than in previous years. We were reminded that during the past two years no expenditures have been made toward the tailgate event. Bob Peplin has agreed to transition into this treasurer’s position.
OLD BUSINESS
Graduation Recap: Peg Backes gave a quick recap of last month’s meeting regarding graduation and stated that Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates has been selected as the 2007 graduation speaker.
Donations: Peg Backes recapped that a $500 donation approved at last month’s meeting will be donated to the Rando Fund, as well as a $100 donation to the Barb Turnquist Family.
NEW BUSINESS
Donations: Cindy Mokos reported that she had received a letter from the third class cadets asking for donations from the parents’ clubs to assist the class in sending care packages to the Fort Carson troops in Iraq during the early part of May.
A motion was made, seconded and approved, that a donation in the amount of $500 be made to this project. This request will be re-evaluated after the Spring Social to see if additional funds can or should be provided for this project.
Spring Social: Patrice Klayum reported that plans for the Spring Social are well underway. The banquet will be held on April 28, 2007 at Olympic Hill Country Club in Eden Prairie. She stated that Ellie Reichel has donated USAFA stamps to use on the invitation envelopes. She also reported that the Sheraton Hotel has offered out-of-town families the price of $99 per night for lodging, which includes the breakfast buffet on Sunday morning. Cindy Mokos and Patrice are working on the USAFA Players performance, and asked for volunteers.
Rick Biddle passed around a sign-up sheet for volunteers to help the day/night of the banquet. He also thanked everyone in advance for their help, and remarked that the 2008 Class Reps are trying to make the event entertaining and affordable.
Darrell Tamosuinas discussed details of the silent auction. At this time he has received $100 in donations. He explored different avenues for donations, including corporate donations, and asked that if any member had ideas, to speak to him directly. It has been decided that a live auction will not be held this year.
Club Shirts: Patrice Klayum spent some time this past week exploring the possibility of new/additional club shirts to be made available to members. She reported that she has been working with a company in Burnsville, Embroidme. She presented new logo suggestions and several items of clothing were shown to be considered. Embroidme offers an online service where each member could order items directly from our club’s “company store”.
After much discussion, a subcommittee was formed to study this issue further. This committee will meet and report their findings at the April 12 Parent’s Night Out. At that time a vote will be taken on whether or not the logo should be changed. If the logo is voted for change, an appropriate logo will be voted on at this meeting and information on new club shirts will be made available at the Spring Social.
Club Buttons: Discussion has been held that our current club buttons are hard to read. Based on this, Kent Klayum has investigated the replacement of these buttons. He has been in contact with a company that will create new buttons. These would have a blue background in the shape of the state of Minnesota, with white lettering. The cost of these will be around $10 per button.
A motion was made and seconded that new club buttons should be purchased. Kent will investigate further on the wording that would be imprinted and get a sample of the button. This new item will be viewed and approved at the April 12 Parents Night Out Meeting.
The club offered a special thanks to Patrice and Kent Klayum for the work and effort they both did to bring the new club shirts and new club buttons information to us.
Orientation: Patrice Klayum stated that the New Appointee Orientation Meeting will be held on Saturday, May 19. A guest speaker is still being sought for this meeting, but it has been recommended that this year’s speaker be a woman.
ALO Report: Major Tom Mattison reported on the cheating scandal that has occurred at the AFA in the past few weeks, the AOG elections, and the appointee count. At this time, 17 candidates from Minnesota have been offered appointments, and 5 have accepted.
Major Mattison’s email address is thmattison@comcast.net if anyone would like to contact him with questions or concerns.
