THE MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT 9:08 a.m. by Darrell Tamosuinas, who welcomed and thanked everyone for attending.
MINUTES of the October 6, 2007 meetings were distributed and approved.
TREASURER’S REPORT – A financial report was submitted that indicated our current reconciled bank balance is $6977.30. This report was approved as submitted and is attached to these minutes.
NEW BUSINESS
Recognition Patches: Patrice Klayum spoke about the 2010 and 2011 Recognition Patches that are available for purchase. At this time she has ordered 8 for the class of 2011. Anyone interested in obtaining a patch should contact her.
ALO Report: Major Tom Mattison reported that the Minnesota ALO’s are hard at work on the Class of 2012. At this time he has 9 interested candidates. The nomination phase has started and he will give updates as the process continues. On a personal note, Tom announced that he has received a promotion to Lt. Col, and will pin on his new rank in June of 2008.
Cookie Packing: Rick Biddle stated that the cookie packing will begin at 10:00 a.m. on December 1. He requested that the class reps arrive at 8:30 a.m. to arrange the continental breakfast, assemble boxes, and prepare for this meeting. Patrice Klayum will send out a reminder e-mail to each class rep for food responsibilities. Patrice also indicated that a letter would be sent during this next week to each family with details about the event.
Discussion was held on the size of the boxes that would be used. Jin Baik agreed to coordinate the purchase of the boxes. Mike Lundquist (class of 2010) works for FedEx, and he and his wife Rita will check into the cost of shipping the cookie boxes via FedEx this year rather than shipping by an airline. Rita stated that she would get the information and relay it for consideration. If FedEx is used for delivery, the cookies would be delivered to Arnold Hall at the AFA on Monday, Dec 3rd, rather than Sunday, December 2nd by airline at the Colorado Springs Airport.
Discussion was held about this delivery date change, but it was the final consensus that either date was acceptable. If the airline method is used, cadets would be required to drive to the airport to pick up the boxes on Sunday, December 2. Ralph Tellefson (Class of 2010) works for Northwest Airlines, and has also agreed to help get the boxes transported to Colorado Springs. The final decision will be made after more information is confirmed.
USAFA Ski Report: Linda Tamosuinas presented information to the club members about skiing opportunities for cadets. She provided a packet of information that included the cost of ski lift tickets, as well as equipment rental and other information. She also discussed the availability for cadets to join the USAFA Ski Club, which offers group transportation and discounts on lodging for its members.
USO Report: Teresa Whitson presented a report to club members on the availability of USO’s (United Service Organizations) at participating airports for use by our cadets. Her report gave the history of the organization and the benefits that are available to our cadets.
She stated that the use of the Armed Forces Service Center, which is a non-profit organization at the Minneapolis Airport, is for active-duty military only – but service academy cadets are welcome there. If you would like further information, research can be done at www.uso.org.
Minnesota Club Fundraiser: Discussion was held on our club selling an item as a fundraiser, as some other parent’s clubs do. At this time, the only monies we collect are from membership dues and the silent auction profits at the spring social. Teresa Whitson suggested selling notecards or stationery with an AFA theme. The question was asked if there were any current cadets who could do the artwork for notecards. One benefit of this as a fundraiser is there would be no breakage in shipping. Any fundraiser that would be considered needs to have an AFA connection or theme.
Announcements
Flu shots (misting) are available and required for USAFA cadets.
Cadet portraits are being taken during the months of October and November. Parents should receive a packet of information in the mail regarding purchase of these portraits.
There are still club positions that need to be filled, so please consider helping the club out by volunteering to chair these positions: Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor, Parent’s Night Out Rep, and Shirt/Button Sales Rep.
Our club is still looking for a central location to host next year’s club meetings as the MAC Building will no longer be available. Anyone with ideas should attend an upcoming meeting, or contact your class representatives so the locations can be discussed.
Attending parents shared news about their cadets and the meeting was adjourned at 10:45 a.m.
